Post-Christmas Post

I'm still working on my end-of-the-year post, and I didn't feel comfortable making such a post before the end of the year. I mean, Skillz couldn't hold back on his "2006 Rap-Up", and now it makes no mention of James Brown's death (RIP).

For now, I have some slaps to share, because it's been a minute. I mean, between shopping til I drop for the holidays and spending time with the family, I haven't had that much time to think about blogging. But I'm back for now.

This is one's interesting:

Team Knoc, Kaz Kyzah "Dumber"

That's right, they sampled Billy Madison for the beat on this one. I think Napoleon Dynamite is in there, too. I've found that hyphy songs have a habit of referencing much more mainstream (read: soft) movies than rap songs usually do. I mean, you usually hear Scarface or Menace II Society sampled and referenced in songs. I guess gangster films just don't go dumb enough to accompany dumb music. The only other examples of this I could think of: The Federation have that whole "O-Face" conversation from Office Space, (written by a UCSD grad, blud). Also, I'm pretty sure one of the dudes on "My Myspace Go" says "freaking idiot" a la Napoleon Dynamite. I'm just shocked that no one has really gone for Dumb and Dumber. The only song I've heard with that is by some backpacker who I think was trying to "say something" about hyphy rap. That doesn't count.

Messy Marv, San Quinn, Ya Boy "Go There (Remix)"

This song's alright. Ya Boy says something like "9 times out of 10, I've got my gun with me". I think that's kinda bullshit. If you're gonna be hard, then go all the way with it, not 90 fucking percent hard.

Mitchy Slick "Dago Got Bloods and Crips"

In case you didn't figure it out, Mitchy is caught up in some gang-banging shit in San Diego. He makes it a bit more explicit here.

Mitchy Slick "Dyin 2 Fucc You"

For some women, Mitchy would be willing to do some foolish stuff on rival turfs just to smash. Think Romeo & Juliet, but set in Southeast San Diego, and much less romantic. "Thinking with my dick ain't cool..."

The Pack "Been In The Game"

You know I'm still listening to The Pack. These dudes must be the horniest motherfuckers out there, but shit, they are in high school. This song go for sure, but it's just funny to hear these young ass kids rapping about nothing but sex. They're just so pumped on it, it's almost cute. No homo.

The Pack, Lil Wayne "Vans (Remix)"

This one isn't new, but I just found the mp3, so here it is. I wouldn't call this a "Vans Remix" so much as it's a freestyle over the "Vans" beat. In fact, it sounds like Wayne did a freestyle over the beat, and then The Pack tacked themselves on the end of it. This certainly more honest than when Cellski would freestyle over other people's beats, then give those big-name rappers a "featuring" credit on the tracklisting. Anyway, enjoy the slaps, I gotta run!

Goodbye Mitchyville

Oh Mitchyville, you will be missed. I'm driving up "the 5" tomorrow, and I think I'm more than a little sad about abandoning the Salty D for as long as I am. They call it America's Finest City, and even though I think that's a dirty lie, I've really gotten to like San Diego just a little bit. I think this is mostly due to a wonderful watering hole known as The Lamplighter. Best Karaoke Bar in San Diego, yes, but it's more than that. Granted, I only turned 21 a few months back, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that The Lamplighter is the best bar EVAR! I can't wait to return to SD for an encore performance of "Hey Ma" on their karaoke stage.

Long drive ahead of me dudes, good thing my dude "kritikal" came through with tremendous knock, or as my angry neighbors called it "incessant booming".

That's right, bitch, those images are links, too. Just learned that one. So enjoy all that, that's almost all of The Pack's catalog right there, plus Skateboards to Scrapers EP comes out on the 22nd, I think. That should make a nice stocking stuffer for someone on your list, guys!

People came through bit on the comments section last post. Wonderbread hooked up a CDQ version of that Keak song I just posted.

Keak Da Sneak "That Go"

Good lookin out, dude. And I gotta admit to being a little "J" that you got your Hunid Racks already. I still don't have shit, but I have high hopes for when I check my mailbox this afternoon.

E-40, Lil Jon, Doey Rock "Monster Up"

This one's really fucking old, but the full version finally came out. I posted it months ago as "Been There, Done That", but now it has a new name, a second 40 Water verse, and a Doey Rock verse. I'm not so sure about this Doey Rock dude, I've heard he's the newest member of Sic-Wid-It. Anyone know more about dude?

Speaking of full versions of songs finally coming out, I have still yet to hear all of Cam'ron's "Oh What a Night". I mean, that first verse alone is probably the best Cam song he's made in years, and yet DJ Kay Slay has never let anyone hear the rest of it. What gives, Kay Slay? That's way effed-up. Is anyone down to start an online petition to get that whole song released? Maybe I'll write my congressman or some shit, I'm that pissed.

Turf Talk "You've Really Got Me Goin"

Speaking of Sic-Wid-It, there's finally a new Turf Talk song out that isn't a recycled or otherwise shitty verse. He kinda flips that old song by The Kinks (that I can only remember the Van Halen version though), but not really. Probably avoided some potential legal problems there.

Hope you dudes enjoy the slaps that you have now been laced with. I've got to get to packing, but don't be shy, go ahead and leave a comment. And once again, shouts out to the dudes who left those links in the comments last post. I'm all about it!

That Go!

Cheuh! Your dude is done with finals and fucking maxing out hella hard in the San Die-GO right now.

Keak Da Sneak "That Go"

I've recently gotten into the habit of saying that things "go", especially if the thing doesn't really go at all. Like, for example:

"Hey where'd you get that sweater?"
"H&M downtown, mayne. H&M hella GO!"

This is actually much more fun than it sounds. Try it out. Keak certainly has. Sorry for the quality on this one, but I think it's a radio rip. I take it this is Keak's new single?

The Pack "Oh Go"

I've only listened to this one once, but I have a bad feeling I'm gonna get addicted to this one. The Pack hella go, for the record. I suppose I might have come off as a Pack-hater from my post a few days back, but that is definitely not the case. I love The Pack (no homo), dudes just weren't that punctual.

Any song that starts out with "Bitch, give me sex" is a hit in my book.

Hell Rell "Ruger in the Trunk"

Hell Rell flips "Money in the Bank" on this one. I liked "Money in the Bank" a lot, actually. But this is way better, Rell can fucking rap really well. For example: "26s rollin on the ride/ break your jaw and have you eatin chicken noodle soup with soda on the side". Whatever, I can't do it justice here. Check it out for yourself.

The one thing in this post that definitely doesn't go is this little bit of news: it looks like Thizzspace might be no more. They claim they're gonna come back, but it's been a couple weeks now, and I wouldn't count on it. A sad day for the internet indeed.

Fuckin Wit Grapes

Shirt by Made In The Bay

Now that my Urban Sociology class is a thing of the past, I felt compelled to share some of the sicc rap music I downloaded while writing my term paper.

Messy Marv, Yukmouth "Fuckin Wit Grapes"

You guessed it, the two flip Poohman's "Fuckin Wit Dank", and make it a more selective weedpot anthem. Oh yeah, update your slang dictionary, 'cause all the cool kids are callin it "weedpot" these days. Note the subtle Hunid Racks plugs that they manage to slip into the song. Indeed, this one's off of the "100 Racks Mixtape". I recently got my promo pack from Hunid Racks that had a bunch of flyers (cause I guess I'm like, part of their street team now?), and a keychain which is now home to the keys to my MPV. Apparently, I'm going to get my free can on the 10th of this month, a whole 5 days before the general public! I'm thrilled.

Mistah FAB "Welcome to the Bay"

Mistah FAB on that new Whoo Kid Bay Bidness mixtape, it seems. It's kinda catchy, but certainly not worthy of any sort of Bay-anthem status. I think it's probably just like, an intro to the mixtape. FAB actually comes kinda hard (no homo) on this one. He filmed a video for "Ghost Ride It", which looks promising, you can check out pics at Ninoy Brown's spot. Also, notice that FAB shouted out Nickatina? Doesn't that seem odd? Nickatina has never really been integrated into the rest of the Bay's scene even if he collaborated with Dre and Quinn a bunch.

The A'z "Guapamole"

This one's kind of a guilty pleasure, cause the A'z really do suck. Or do they? Cause this song is catchy as a motherfucker. I mean, this is more devoid of substance than any rap song I've heard in recent history, but it's really kinda tight. It barely even has a beat, and the song is pretty much just materialistic call-and-response bullshit. But hey, these guys are signed and I can't stop listening, so what do I know? My favorite line:

"I think I need a mansion
You think you need a mansion?
I think I need a mansion
think you need a mansion?
I need a house on the hill, hella drugs inside
hella drugs inside?
Wit hella drugs inside"

That's what most of the song is like. But I can seriously think of no cruder way to talk about dealing drugs than to say that your house has "hella drugs inside".

Eddie Projex, Mistah FAB, Too Short "On Like Me (Remix)"

Someone was talking about the original version of this song in the comments section a while back, but I had no idea what they were talking about. The song's pretty tight, if you liked the original (which I haven't heard), I imagine you'll like this one.

Finally, I also got me hands on that new Jeezy. The last one was probably one of my favorite rap albums in hella long. I don't know if this one's quite as good, cause I haven't had that much time to listen to it, but I do know that this song is harder than a motherfucking goddam rock!

Young Jeezy "J.E.E.Z.Y."

You can't argue with that. My only complaint is that there's absolutely no reason that the song shouldn't be titled "Jeezy". There is no acronym to be found anywhere in the song.

Well dudes bluds, it's about time I get to work on my Politics of Immigration essay. Here's some food for thought:

"Governments make laws and policies, but the free market sets its own rules, and market forces invaraiably trump government intentions in the area of immigration" Argue for or against this generalization, citing relevant evidence from at least two different countries. Be sure to cite specific examples of market forces prevailing (or failing to prevail) over government interventions. If you endorse the generalization, cite examples of the free market setting its own rules. To what extent can the lack of consensus about immigration policy in the US (and other labor-importing countries) be attributed to the tension between market forces and government laws/policies?

Hey, I wonder which side my professor is taking? Well, he's right anyway, I just don't know if I've ever seen a pro/con essay question that so explicity endorses one side.

Got Their Vans On, But They Aren't That Punctual...

So, my dude Chris The Intern from SLAP Skatebording Magazine recently did an interview with The Pack, which is pretty cool, right? Anyway, Chris was pumped, understandably. He wanted to challenge them to a game of SKATE (for those keeping score at home, I hella beat Chris at SKATE last weekend. But he did deal me quite the shinner), and take a group portait for the interview. Unfortunately, the dudes weren't all that punctual. I forget the details, but Young L showed up, called the other guys, who were stuck in traffic, and then bouned up the street for almost an hour to play Madden at his boy's house (Chris the Intern, too, resides in South Berkeley). Anyway, they all got there about an hour and a half late, it was too dark to skate or take a picture, and they weren't in any mood to be interviewed by Chris. So, apparently it didn't go that well, but it will look good in print, says Chris (Also, because they didn't get their picture taken, there will instead be an original portrait of the four guys riding a wolf, who is riding a skateboard). I'm thrilled.

I really like The Pack. I also like Dem Franchize Boyz, and I think there's a connection. I mean, neither group is very lyrical at all, but they make some catchy, amazing music. Also, they've both pioneered their own fashion trends as their break-out hit (Franchize with a little more success). Also, the names of the dudes in the group are incredibly unremarkable.

The Pack = Young L, Young Stunna, Lil' B, and Lil' Uno

Dem Franchize Boyz = Jizzal Man, Pimpin', Parlae, and Buddie

Anyway, enough blabbering about The Pack, they rule. Let's hear some tracks:

The Pack "Freak It"

They jack Kurupt's old hook from "We Can Freak It", but add a safe-sex twist to it. I think that's nice that kids these days are into the safe sex. Also, I wasn't as surprised that this song was a sex song as I was when I listened to "Ride My Bike".

The Pack "Gimme Money"

Imagine that! A song about pimping. Hey, maybe Too Short has some creative control here. Anyway, it's kinda got a Too Short, "Can't Fight the Feeling" vibe, cause some broad raps on this one, too. I had never heard the expression "Money over Dick" until I heard this song. No homo.

Go Dav, The Pack "Punk Rock Remix"

This is the HUF kids' anthem right here. They rap about skateboard clothing, and almost nothing but. Even the ugly shit like Circa, DVS, and Emerica. I mean, I love to skate in Emericas, but most of them aren't that fresh.

The guy near the end makes two metaphors that just aren't rocking for me, and he does it back to back. He says something like, "my drawers got skulls like Vietnam/ punk rocks ????? just like Uncle Tom". If anyone can figure out that Uncle Tom line, I'd love to know.

The Pack, Ratatat "Vans Mashup"

Gotta say what up to Different Kitchen for this one. I like it, it's the Vans song, with that one Ratatat song you've probably heard if you have hipsterish friends. I think it goes, but some people hate. Whatever.

Anyway, that's enough Pack for right now, just like DFB, they can get grating. This is my favorite song at the moment:

Mitchy Slick "Got Snow"

Mitchy Slick on a DJ Muggs beat, I think. So fucking sick. Mitchy Slick is the truth. He has already filmed videos for "Bass Chasers" and "It Ain't My Fault". I'm not a huge fan of "It Ain't My Fault", but that might change, cause check out the preview for the video!!

Next week in finals week here in the Salty D, so you prolly won't hear from me in a minute. But fear not, there's rumors of another member of the Nation being added...
