Slap Factory/Rap Shack/Bay Life

Ah yes. It's a new year, and people I know are up to good things. Always a nice feeling. No homo. Let's start things off with my dude Sac Masta, of the Slap Factory.

It's been said before. The first time I ever attempted to rap, it was at Sac Masta's house, in his closet studio. He made all the high school bangers like "T-Sacks and Cadillacs" (my personal favorite - Isaac, if you have that, send it to me, please), "The Price of Ice" and "Sharks and Minnows", among others.

Sac Masta is still at it, with Bean to the Bay 2 a compilation (collabilation?) with Boston artists rapping over Sac's production. Boston? Yeah, Boston. It's cool to hear dudes from somewhere else rapping over Bay Area beats instead of the other way around. And, from what I gather, black dudes from Boston don't have that horrible accent. Christers, could you imagine?

Chinenyeze "Step Up 168"

The production on this one kinda reminds me of some of the production on Hustlin Since Da 80's, AKA the best album EVAR. I initially thought this was somehow gonna be about the significance of "168" in Chinese numerology. It means something like "the road to prosperity", which is really tyt. Turns out it's how much the dude weighs. And he's not Chinese, he's black. Still, the song is tyt.

Sellasie "Fall Victim"

This is probably the most hardbody song on the album. I swore to god it was Cellski rapping on those first two bars. It isn't. It's Sellasie.

Here's the first single off the album, "Tho It Up":

You can get the CD at CD Baby. Chyeah.

And just to keep things real Youtube-y in this bitch, let's go to a rap video directed by a kid from UCSD. That's right, snitches - J-Short, a Triton co-directed a hardbody-ass rap video for B.A.Y.

I'm pretty sure these dudes are from Vallejo. Considering, you know, that one kid is wearing a shirt that says "Vallejo" on it. And Jon is from Vallejo.

You can check them out at their myspace. Where else?

And finally, on a much lighter note, Saul Cohen AKA Tre is back on YouTube. Apparently, there's gonna be weekly episodes of Bay Life. I haven't heard such good news in years. Let's start things off with the first one, where Saul explains his car accident. This one really hit home for me, what with the spaceship crash and all.

"That fool was about about to have a heart attack....cause he had one before, so I thought he was gonna have another one."

Wow. Be sure to check samfuller's channel for more Bay Life to come.

Sorry to disappoint, Mr. Wonk, but no one from the greater Boston area is safe from that most abrasive of accents. It is insidious, domineering and wretched. Thankfully, I've been spared the pain of hearing someone describe themselves as a "hahd bohdy", but never say never, right? I'm holding my breath for a "wicked dumb retahded" verse from anyone. and selassie is from the bay area. Hopefully this Slap factory project will put someone other than guru and Mr. lif on the map for the Boston rap biome.

Oh, and have you forgotten about the greatest track the sac ever produced? "Beat the Bitch" = instant classic.

I give Gordo's on Geary about a 7, which is excellent for the rest of the world but only good enough in San Francisco, the hometown of the burrito. Hit up Pancho Villa if you want quality.

yo if someone sees one of those Vallejo sweatshirts, I'm a medium aight?

also, I grew up in Boston, and I only ever met one black dude with a thick boston accent. He didn't rap, unfortunately.
