Insane Clown Posse, #Based?

When a piece of underground rap rockets into internet memedom, and mainstream critic land, without any of us who actually actually listen to rap having the chance to take a swing at it, I think something gets lost. Specifically, ways to somehow triangulate this phenomenon with concurrent trends in Bay Area rap.

When Jonah Weiner describes Juggalos as "something like the music-world version of Trekkies: a community of (and support group for) self-identifying outcasts, who don homemade costumes, speak in a private language, and revel in their societal-reject status", it's hard not to think of our man Lil B, and his mini-movement. So long as you forget about the homemade costumes. And Lil B's twitter page is replete with this kind of everyday mysticism, or sort of magical realism, that is similarly hard to pin down, or fit in to your understanding of what making rap music - and listening to rap music - is all about.

Now granted, Lil B's music tends to be much more about his rich inner world. But I can't help but notice some similarities between Lil B and ICP, and the way they have branded their movements and followers so thoroughly. Maybe, someday there will be a #BASEDFEST somewhere at Altamont Pass or something.
