And in a Twitter DM, Roach Gigz sent me his latest video, "Pop Off", which has already made the rounds because it's pretty incredible.
The video was shot in the days surrounding the Johannes Mehserle trial, concerning the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant at Fruitvale BART. Aris Jerome does a great job of using the abandoned storefronts of Downtown Oakland as a backdrop for some populist rage against the police powers of the state. The hundreds of wheatpaste posters of Mr. Grant's face act as a rebuttal to Shepard Fairey's iconic HOPE poster of Obama's face. The video is clever, and surprisingly powerful. It's might be the best I've seen since "Trap Goin Ham".

I really respect this blog and I find everything posted here to be usually really funny, insightful and well written. But for the life of me I can't get into Roach Gigz and other white rappers with whiny voices. As far as I'm concerned, your voice has got to have bass or you've got to black or something to be a dope rapper. I dunno, maybe Paul Wall or El-P when he's not being corny are exceptions...

I'm friends with the dude and collective of folks who produced the Oscar Grant tribute mural in downtown Oakland and I think this shit is a straight joke. Dude's talking about "pimpin' bitches at the tele" and shit. There's absolutely no mention of Oscar Grant in this song. I wonder what Grant's family would think of this crap. Roach dude completely missed the point using Bounce's mural for the background.
